Gauteng to probe MEC for misconduct

Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will study allegations of misconduct against the department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment (GDACE).
In a statement on Tuesday, the premier's office said allegations of misconduct against GDACE MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu had been received from the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday and the MEC had been asked to respond to the claims.
Last week, DA spokesperson Rika Kruger called for a probe into "suspicious" interventions regarding the granting of approvals for some multi-million rand development.
She said a 20-page report compiled by the DA and environmental groups outlined numerous instances when Mosunkutu had favoured developers who had broken laws designed to protect the environment.
Among the developments that Kruger cited as "irregularities" was a petrol station in Boksburg, the Waters Edge development, and Ebotse Golf and Country Estate in Benoni, as well as the Blair Athol Estate.
Kruger estimated that the Blair Athol Golf Estate was worth more than R800-million while the Ebotse development was worth more than R500-million.
Mosunkuntu was expected to respond to the claims by the end of next week.
"The Premier [Shilowa] will then decide on the best way to handle the matter after studying both reports from the DA and from the MEC," the premier's office said. - Sapa
