GOD HELP THIS RAGGED , MURDEROUS COUNTRY UNDER CARELESS ANC RULE

By Thandi Skade

A Good Samaritan trying to assist an armed robbery victim was gunned down in front of his three-year-old son.

About noon on Thursday, a man who had just returned to work in Kempton Park from a bank after withdrawing R10 000 was approached by five armed men who demanded cash, his cellphone and his firearm.

"We suspect he was followed," said police spokesperson Zenzile Murudi.

'lock those pigs up and throw away the keys'
At that moment, an unidentified 27-year-old man, was driving his bakkie down Pomona Road and witnessed the robbery.

He jumped out of his vehicle to assist the victim, but was shot.

He died at the scene.

Murudi said that when the robbers saw members of the Benoni Flying Squad, who were on patrol at the time, a shootout broke out.

"The police managed to arrest four men, while a fifth was shot and killed," she said.

Three unlicensed firearms and the robbery victim's possessions were recovered.

When The Star arrived at the scene, both sides of the road had been cordoned off and the unnamed motorist's body lay covered next to his bakkie where he had fallen.

The four suspects were lying on the grass next to the road, handcuffed and feet bound, waiting to be taken to Kempton Park police station.

The fifth suspect's covered body lay further down the road, and the getaway car was tangled in the fence into which the men had crashed while fleeing.

Bystanders were outraged by what they termed a senseless murder, and there were cries of "lock those pigs up and throw away the keys".

The four men - aged between 20 and 40 - were charged with armed robbery, murder and being in possession of unlicensed firearms, and would appear soon in court, Murudi said.
